UAE, France Leaders Hold Talks on Boosting Ties

(MENAFN) President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held talks on Sunday with French President Emmanuel Macron, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional issues of shared concern.

According to a state-owned news agency, the two leaders assessed the long-standing strategic partnership between the UAE and France and discussed expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors. These included the economy and investment, culture, renewable energy, advanced technology, artificial intelligence, and sustainability.

Defense cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. France and the UAE share close military ties, with Abu Dhabi ranking among the largest purchasers of French defense equipment, including fighter aircraft. Media reports have indicated that Paris is weighing closer collaboration with the UAE on its next-generation combat aircraft program, as questions persist over the commitment of its European partners.

During his stay, Macron also visited French troops deployed in the UAE. Media reports said he announced that France had granted final approval for the replacement of its flagship nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, as part of a long-term defense modernization plan.

The French president is on a working visit to the UAE to mark the end-of-year holidays with French forces stationed overseas and to engage Emirati leaders on bilateral cooperation and regional stability. In a social media post, Macron said his talks with the UAE leader centered on reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations, with a particular emphasis on supporting stability in the Middle East.
