Netanyahu Urges UAE Leader to Deny Oct. 7 Warning, Media Says
Citing unspecified sources, the newspaper said Netanyahu pressed the Emirati leader to refute accounts of their phone call and of the run-up to the attack that “could embarrass him,” according to the paper. One source told the newspaper the Israeli leader also sought “moral support,” the newspaper reported.
Two people briefed on the trip said the two leaders met for one hour. Neither Israeli nor Emirati officials have officially confirmed the visit.
The report lands amid mounting controversy over a string of media disclosures about intelligence warnings Netanyahu allegedly received before the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. On Friday, The New York Times reported that the UAE president had privately warned Netanyahu ahead of the assault, and that Netanyahu did not relay the warning to Israel's security chiefs.
Netanyahu has headed Israel's current government since late 2022. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel's war on Gaza, which began Oct. 8, 2023, has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 175,000, most of them women and children. It has also damaged 90% of the territory's infrastructure.
